Damon Dash Mourns Aaliyah 'Every Single Day'

Rap mogul Damon Dash mourns the death of ex-girlfriend Aaliyah every day, seven years on from her tragic death. The pair was dating when the R&B singer was killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas in 2001. And Dash insists he has never gotten over the loss.He tells WENN, "I commemorate her every single day in my own way. I knew her very well and one thing she loved about me was I lived my life. I continue doing that."

Aaliyah Biopic on the Way

Fans can breathe easier now that the director, Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) has assured that the yet-to-be-titled biopic of the late R&B singer Aaliyah will be just as flawless as Jennifer Lopez's acclaimed role in Selena.

In addition to the casting of Keisha Chante, who will be playing Aaliyah, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah's choreographer and dear friend Fatima Robinson will appear. Sources close to the film say they're going deep into the late singer's life.

“Fallen Angel” Aaliyah Would Have Been 30

The late R&B singer would have been 30 years old today had she not been killed in a 2001 plane crash. Friends and fans of Aaliyah are marking a bittersweet birthday today. The R&B singer, who would have been 30 years old today, was killed when a plane, carrying her and several others back from a video shoot in the Bahamas, crashed after takeoff, on Aug. 25 2001.

The slim songstress, real name Aaliyah Dana Haughton, was only 22 at the time of her death, but had already built up a well-respected body of work. She was first introduced to audiences by R&B crooner R. Kelly, at the young age of 15. Her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, was a hit and featured several singles that charted high on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts at the time.
On her sophomore album, One in a Million, Aaliyah worked with then-unknown producers Missy Elliot and Timbaland. The release is widely credited with introducing the avant-guard songwriters’ unique production styles to the world as well as massively influencing an entire generation of hip-hop producers and female singers.

The album also turned Aaliyah into a full-fledged celebrity and allowed her to expand her professional interests, from acting in movies like Romeo Must Die to modeling in campaigns for fashion-designer Tommy Hilfiger.

Aaliyah’s self-titled third album was also a big hit, but tragically, the singer was not around to enjoy most of its success. She was killed soon after its release after filming a video for the album’s single, “Rock the Boat,” in the Bahamas. The twin engine Cessna 402B that was chartered to return her and her entourage to the United States crashed soon after takeoff, killing all on board.

Later investigations revealed that the small plane had been extremely overburdened by the multiple passengers and their heavy cargo. The pilot was also found to have faked several of his flying qualifications and may possibly have been under the influence of various different drugs while operating the vehicle.

Aaliyah’s untimely death led to an outpouring of grief from fans and the music community. Many of her collaborators, most notably Missy Elliot, have made a point of mentioning or displaying her name and image in their songs and music videos, even to the present day. She has also become a popular subject for street artists and clothing prints, often being included in group portraits along with other fallen hip-hop icons, such as Jam-Master-Jay and Tupac Shakur.

Film Tribute For Aaliyah

HOLLYWOOD bosses are finalizing plans for a movie telling the tragic story of R&B star Aaliyah.

She had notched up a string of hits and wowed audiences in her acting debut as Queen Of The Damned when she was killed in a plane crash in 2001, aged just 22.

Canadian lookalike singer Keisha Chante has been cast as Aaliyah in the bio-pic.

Aaliyah's family send message to fans

Aaliyah’s family has released a message to their daughter’s fans, to mark the fifth anniversary of the R&B singer’s death.

Here is the message from the Haughton family in full:

"We greatly appreciate everyone's love and well wishes over the past 5 years. You are constantly loving of Aaliyah; honoring her and the Haughton Family and we will never forget what you have done. Thou it has been five years, it really has not been that long as we are still reeling from the year of 2001. We all have come a very long way and we recognize that however, we have lost so much.

“Aaliyah is no longer with us on this earth but we have come far enough to understand that she is all around us and she is always here for us. On the 25th of every year, we donate money to a charity on behalf of the Aaliyah Memorial Fund.

Aaliyah is here, she is still here, giving, caring, loving. We will never be the same after August 25th 2001 but we know there is a place that we will all end up one day. A place where Aaliyah is waiting and all of us are going to make it there… we will all make it.

“We love everyone of you who and appreciate everyone who has done something in Aaliyah's name big or small. Whatever it is you all have done, it means the world to us. As long as every year, you remember Aaliyah and her friends on August 25th, we know in our hearts everything is going to be alright.

It was five years ago today that fans were rocked by the tragic death of Aaliyah, but the Brooklyn-born songstress is far from forgotten.

"Her passing was probably the hardest out of all the people we lost in the hip-hop world," said Mister Cee, a deejay at Hot 97 (WQHT-FM), who is hosting an hour-long tribute to the angelic-faced singer during his "Throwback at Noon" show today.

"I just want listeners to know we haven't forgotten her. It's keeping her spirit alive," the deejay said.Aaliyah was only 22 when she and eight others were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, where she had been shooting a video.The twin-engine plane was overloaded by 700 pounds when it went up in flames. Investigators also found cocaine and alcohol in the pilot's system.While her untimely death was mourned as an easily preventable tragedy, her farewell was a carefully planned extravaganza.

The star-studded funeral - marked by dozens of pink roses, white doves and over a thousand guests - attracted the likes of Sean (Diddy) Combs, Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim.A glass-paneled hearse drawn by two horses carried her body, housed in a silver-plated coffin, from the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on the upper East Side to services at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Ave.Shortly before her death, Aaliyah was nominated for a Grammy award for her song "Try Again." She also appeared in the film "Romeo Must Die" and was a niece of iconic soul singer Gladys Knight.
